Damn Good Friday

Workout:

60 minute walk with dogs

30 minutes of Wii Just Dance

7.5 mile run – 1:15:41

Hot damn!  It was a Good Friday!  In fact, a GREAT Friday.  Since I work at a catholic college, I had today off, and I will have Monday off also.  If I didn’t have a job, I would be a marathon runner in no time.  Having the day off, I got to take my time getting ready for my run today.  I had 5 miles on the schedule, but it’s FINALLY soooo nice in ol’ Wisconsin, that I just couldn’t stop running.  At first, I was just going to keep going to 6, but 6 came and went, and I still didn’t want to stop.  I felt sooooo good!  My breathing was right now, I never once felt out of breath, and my mind was totally focused.  I considered trying to actually hit 10 miles, but since I was right in front of my house at 7.5, if figured that was good enough.  I don’t want to push it too far too fast, and burn myself out.

I did all of my working out before noon, and hours later, I’m still feeling my runners high!

I Took the Plunge!

Workout:

2 mile run on treadmill – 21:??

10 minutes level 5 intervals on elliptical

30 minutes Wii Just Dance

I have exciting news!  I took the plunge, and registered for my first full marathon!  I have been eyeing up the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon for months.  Today, I was wondering what has kept me from registering when running a full marathon is one of my goals.  The only reason I could come up with for not registering earlier is fear of failure.  I think most people battle fear of failure in their lives, some on a daily basis.  I can’t reasonably fear failure if I don’t even try in the first place.  What’s the worst that could happen? I’m completely unprepared, and end up not finishing the race?  Yes, that would be extremely disappointing, but I already know I’ll be prepared.  I would not have even considered running a marathon if it was something I did not think I could accomplish.

I know I can accomplish this feat, and I will.

*Be warned, some TMI ahead.* As for working out tonight, it didn’t go so hot.  I was supposed to run 5 miles tonight, but tummy issues prevented me from doing that.  After the first mile, I had some terrifying rumbling and churning going on.  I tried to tough it out, but JUST after I hit the 2 mile mark, I HAD to stop.  I made my way to the gym bathroom, but of course, it was being cleaned.  Since I was off the treadmill, and my insides weren’t being jumbled as much, I actually felt better.  Waiting for the bathroom, or just hoping I was over the tummy issue, I hopped on the elliptical to see how low impact would affect my digestive system.  As you can see by my measly time, it didn’t quite work.  I was so preoccupied by my innards, that I’m not even sure what my running time was.  I just know it was slow, and painful.

Rather than waiting around to use the gym bathroom, and my horrendously irrational fear of pooping in public bathrooms, I said, “fuck it,” and went home.

Once I got home and relieved myself, I felt guilty for not getting in a very good workout.  Since Just Dance gets me super sweaty, and gets my heart pumpin’, I danced like there’s going to be no tomorrow to round out my workout for the day.

I have 2 miles on my schedule for Friday so I’m just going to rearrange my plan for the week, count that workout as completed, and do the 5 on another day.  Training is not going to always go perfectly each day so I just have to learn to be flexible, and figure out how to compromise.

Last Chance Workout

Sunday Workout:

45 minutes Wii Just Dance (I don’t know about you, but it makes me SUPER sweaty!)

45 minutes of level 5 intervals on elliptical

2 mile run on treadmill – 18:28

30 minutes 3.5 MPH walk at 4% incline

30 minutes on stationary bike – 8 miles

Saturday afternoon, and into Sunday morning, I watched 4 or 5 episodes of The Biggest Loser.  Watching all these episodes fueled yesterday’s obsessive workout schedule.  All I could think about was my weigh in this morning, and how Sunday was my “last chance workout.”  I didn’t have the greatest week last week; diet wise and workout wise.  I slacked on a few workouts, and I had a couple weakness binges.  I had it in my mind though that if I pushed and pushed yesterday, I might just be able to pull a good figure on the scale.

Alas, I didn’t.  Instead of losing any weight, I gained.  It was only a .3lb gain, but still, it was a gain.  I am so disappointed in myself for slacking during the week.  But, in the words of Michael BublĂ©, “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good.”  I’m working on bettering myself and embracing a new lifestyle.  It’s going to be hard work, and I’m not going to be a pro off the bat.  All I can do is learn from mistakes, and try not to make the same mistakes twice.

This week, I’m going to kick major ass.

Outdoor Run

Workout:

3.77 mile run – 36:33

Ahhhhh, my first outdoor run of the season!  Today reaffirmed why I enjoy running. Running on a treadmill can be boring, tedious, exhausting, mind numbing…enter any not so positive verb you prefer…but running outside is a whole different experience.  There is more to look at than the same wall so your mind doesn’t focus on the difficulties of running.

I was extremely nervous for my run today because I had no idea how it was going to go.  I have not run outside at all since September, and after running so much on the treadmill, I was worried I would have a crappy run.  After barely eking out 10 minute miles on the treadmill, I ran 9:41 miles outside.  I definitely need to stretch a little before running outside tomorrow.  Since it was 34 degrees, my muscles weren’t as loose as they normally are in the climate controlled gym.  After the first 2 miles, I felt like I couldn’t extend my legs to their full stride very well.

Something I still need to get the hang of is dressing for cold weather running. I ALWAYS end up wearing too much, and getting extremely hot. You think I would have it figured out by now, but nope, I still don’t.  I’m just such a big baby about that initial cold that I always put on something too heavy.  Tomorrow, I’ll just have to keep it in my mind that I’ll be more than toasty after the first few minutes.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Beastmode

Workout:

3.5 mile run on treadmill – 34:52

30 minute walking 3.5 MPH at 4% incline

25 minutes on upright bike – 6.6 miles

Tonight, I turned on my BEASTMODE!

Today sucked at work.  I was extremely busy, but didn't have the time to work on my own work.  Our new employee started today, and I had to train her, so I didn't have time to do my own stuff.  After a busy, stressful day, the last thing I wanted to do was go to the gym.  I finally forced myself to go around 8, and didn't stop moving until 10.

My run started rough.  I began compromising with myself immediately.  After the first mile, I had myself convinced I would just run 2 tonight, which is my workout for tomorrow, and run the 3.5 miles tomorrow instead.  Once I reached mile 2 though, I realized I was just fine, and in reality was just being a huge baby.  I pumped up my speed from 5.9 to 6.2, and flew….well, I consider that flying since I’m kind of slow runner… Over the last 1.5 miles, my speed continued to increase, and I ended with an all out sprint at 7.5 MPH.  BEASTMODE!

I felt fantabuloso after my killer run, and decided to keep the ol’ ticker pumping.  I did my usual brisk cool-down, inclined walk, and ended my night at the gym with a ride on the upright.
It’s now almost 10:30, and I feel jacked!  Gotta love those endorphins!  Even though I’m wide awake, I need to wash my stanky self, and get to bed.  If I don’t get my zzzzs, I’ll be a scary zombie tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Workout:
45 minutes strength training
30 minutes 3.5 MPH 5% incline walk on treadmill
STRETCHING

Sunday’s Workout:
4 mile run on treadmill – 41:03
35 minutes 3.5 MPH 4% incline walk on treadmill
30 minutes on upright bike

Saturday’s Workout:
3 mile run on treadmill – 30:11
30 minutes 3.5 MPH 4% incline walk on treadmill
45 minutes strength training

It was a busy weekend so I did not have time to post.  Saturday, Molly dog had to go to the vet for her annual check-up.  Her appointment wasn't until 11:00 so I planned on getting up to work out before hand, but the bed just couldn't let me go.  I woke up at 7, but laid in bed with the dogs until about 8.  The smell of coffee, and the rumbling of my stomach, finally drew my butt downstairs.  Once I ate, I still had to time make it to the gym, but I like to take my time when I work out.  I didn't want to feel rushed, so I decided to just go in the afternoon.

After the vet, I stopped at the mall hoping to buy more workout tanks from JC Penny.  They have great sweat wicking tanks for only $6 a piece, but unfortunately everything was picked over, and there were none left in my size except black.  All of my running capris and tights are black, and I didn't want to be covered in black from head to toe, so I left empty handed.

Since I was already in Mad-town, and didn't want to come back Sunday to grocery shop, I got that taken care of Saturday also.  Molly dog was such a good, patience girl while I was running all my errands, that we stopped at PetsMart on our way home for new toys and some treats.

Nick’s brother and wife were coming over that afternoon to have dinner with us for St. Patrick’s Day.  Slaving away all day, Nick made fabulous corned beef and cabbage.  After we ate dinner, and Ryan and Kaylin left, I really didn't have the motivation to work out, but I lay on the floor for a bit, stretched, and decided I had to leave for the gym stat, or I would never go.

When I got to the gym, I had it all to myself.  It was about 7, on a Saturday, the night before St. Pat’s, so I’m assuming everyone was out celebrating.  I was celebrating by working up a good sweat.  I did all the strength moves I learned from my instructor on Wednesday.  I can’t wait for my muscles to get toned and start showing.  When I flex my arms, I have a pathetic little bicep line, but before I know it, I’m going to be selling tickets to the gun show!

Sunday morning, Nick and I met our friends at the Great Dane for brunch.  The Great Dane has an all you can eat brunch buffet on Sunday, and it’s phenomenal.  I tried to be good, but once I calculated everything I ate, it was just over 1,000 calories!!  I did stop eating before I completely stuffed myself though, so that was a win.  We didn't eat until after 10 though, so all those calories did cover me for lunch also.

Once we got home, I took a snooze after eating all that great food, and Nick got started on his bar room project.  We decided we are going to build a bar in our lowest basement.  We have a tri-level house, so we have a basement living room, and guest suite, but then we also have a lower basement that is unfinished and currently just has our washer and dryer, and is used for storage.  Nick is starting slowly, and is planning on drawing that project out over a few months, instead of all at once, so we don’t have to get a building permit, and so it’s a little easier on our finances.

When I woke up, I headed to the gym.  Since I ate some many calories at brunch, I knew I was going to have to work hard.  Sunday is my long run day so I had to run 4 miles.  It went smoothly, and as I neared mile 4, I felt like I could keep going.  That’s great because next Sunday, I finally up my long run to 5 miles.  I did my usual walk after running to make sure I fully cooled down.  I almost left after that, but decided I still had enough energy to burn a few more calories, so I biked for half an hour.

All this week, I have to work the closing shift so I have an extra hour and a half in the mornings.  My plan was to wake up at the same time, but do my workouts in the mornings instead of at night, but that didn't happen this morning.  Nor do I see it happening tomorrow.  I know it’s supposed to be better, but I am just not a morning workout person.  I woke up as usual at 5:30, but I just couldn't make myself go to the gym.  In the morning, I would rather take my time getting ready.  I would rather sit at the counter and drink a few cups of coffee, catch up on blog reading, and play with the dogs.  I would rather make a nice, filling breakfast like eggs, and take my time eating it.  Plus, I feel like it’s more of a stress reliever to work all day, and then sweat it out at night.

I hope everyone had a fabulous, and safe, St. Patrick’s Day!

Why?!

donuts
Why? Oh why, oh why did I do that?!  I just ate not 1, but 2(!) donuts.  According to MyFitnessPal, I wasted 490 calories on those donuts, and 30g of fat!  Now I feel icky, bloated, and guilty.  Just like I knew I would, and yet I still ate them.
One of our books reps, who ALWAYS brings us treats, stopped by today with a dozen Dunkin Donuts in tow.  I curse you, Howie!  Why would you do that to me?!  Donuts are a huge weakness for me.  If they’re not around, I don’t go out and buy them, but when they’re within reach, I have a difficult time saying no.  They’ve been in the office since 10:30, and I made an effort to stay away, but by noon, I had one.  Then 20 minutes later, I had another.
Now I’m wallowing in my sorrows for not being stronger.  Alas, there isn’t anything I can do about it now.  What’s done is done, and regretting my decision won’t change it.  For the rest of the day, I just need to be much more mindful of what I put in my body, and the next time I’m at the gym, I’ll have to work extra hard.
After work, Nick and I are going out to dinner with friends.  I have already checked out the menu, and found a few options that will help me salvage the rest of the day.  Since I won’t have time to go to the gym today, I swapped my Friday and Saturday workouts.  Today, I would have run 3 miles, but instead I did my Saturday 30 minutes cardio by walking the dogs before work.  Tomorrow, I’ll run and do my strength training in.  Since I ate those donuts today, I’m also going to do some extra cardio on either the bike or elliptical to blast those calories away.

Rest Day

Yesterday’s Workout:
45 minutes strength training
2 mile run on treadmill – 19:47
Today’s Workout:
Rest day, but I took the woofers for a 30 minute walk
Yesterday, I went to the gym for my strength class and my 2 mile run.  Low and behold, I was the only one to show up for the class, so I ended up getting a one-on-one personal training session instead!  It was pretty awesome.  I like to do my strength reps slowly and fluidly, and it seems like I’m always getting behind by a rep in class because everyone else goes so quickly.  Since it was just me yesterday, I got to go at my own pace, which may I say, the instructor was impressed with.  He said going slowly shows discipline, and is tougher/works the muscles better because you’re hold the tension longer.  It was great working one-on-one with the instructor because he showed me more enhanced moves, and how to carry out each move in a more precise manner so I will get better results.  I was also able to ask a lot of questions without having to worry about interrupting the entire class.
Yesterday’s run went really well.  I felt great, but I unfortunately got stuck on the treadmill that’s situated right in front of the clock.  I always cover the treadmill screen with a towel so I don’t stare at the distance or time, but I couldn’t avoid the clock on the wall that was right in front of my face.  I just tried to concentrate on my breathing and strides to take my mind of the ticking minute hand.
Since today is a rest day, and I've been killing it this week a t the gym, I'm taking full advantage of a day off.  Besides the walk this morning with the pups, I've just been relaxing, which included a marvelous bubble bath.  Now it's time to get back to snuggling with these love bugs...

Kale Chips

Workout:
3 mile run on treadmill – 31:27
30 minute walking 3.5 mph at 4% incline
My run tonight was a little difficult.  I wanted so badly to stop at 2 miles, which is my workout for tomorrow, and just do 3 tomorrow instead, but I sucked it up and stuck with it.  I’m not sure what my deal was, but my breathing was so off, and I felt like I was constantly gasping.  Thankfully, I listen to my IPod when I run, so I couldn’t really hear my crazy, erratic breathing.
Last night, I attempted to make kale chips for the first time.  I was super pumped to make these babies because I have heard such great things about them.  Unfortunately, mine sucked.  Well, they tasted ok, but just ok, and were not anything like a “chip”.  I think I had too much “dressing” to my kale ratio.  I love balsamic vinegar so I decided to make balsamic kale chips from a recipe I found here.  My chips were soggy, and would not crisp up, so there had to be too much liquid for the amount of kale I used.  Also, the only kale I could find at my grocery store was pre-chopped, and the leaves were quite small.  I thought that since the leaves were so small, I would have to keep an extra watchful eye on them so they wouldn't burn up.  I was wrong.  Oh well, I’ll just have to experiment, and figure out what works best.
Even though the kale chips were not a total success tonight, I am going to count the effort of making them as one of my “try something new” items in March.  I still have plenty of kale left so I’ll definitely be giving it another shot soon.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Whew!

Workout:
45 muscle strengthening class
30 minutes walking 3.5 mph at a 4% incline
Whew!  That muscle strengthening class was tough tonight!  I haven’t been able to go in a week, but damn, I didn't expect to be that out of the loop.  The instructor switched up some of the moves so I’m thinking that’s why I found it more difficult.  With the increased difficulty, I had an increased sense of pride after finishing the class.
Tonight, I’m going to take my first stab at making kale chips.  I have not had kale before.  Not raw, nor baked into chips.  I have heard rave reviews about the chips though, and it seems like a great way to sneak extra veggies into my diet.  I’ll post tomorrow about the outcome.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Triple Threat

Workout:
4 mile run on treadmill – 41:18
30 minute 3.5 MPH walk on treadmill
2 mile run on treadmill – 20:13
This past week was hellish at work, so I ended up skipping most of my workouts for the week.  The last time I worked out was on Tuesday, when I got home early from our snow day at work.  Today, I FINALLY got my butt back to the gym.
Work was hellish because a co-worker, whose last day was supposed to be this upcoming Friday, decided after the snow day that she just wasn’t going to come in anymore.  As I have mentioned before, I work at a college bookstore.  I am the textbook manager, so I am in charge of getting textbooks orders from all the instructors, supplying that information to students, and getting those books ordered for the appropriate semester.  Besides me, there is a head manager, a retail manager, and a handful of student workers.  The retail manager was the one who decided to cut her last two weeks short.  Our manager had major surgery 3 weeks ago, and is not yet able to work full time.  Since the manager can only work certain hours, I had been in charge of both opening and closing the store.  Wednesday through Friday, I ended up working 7:15-5:45 each day.  Those three days were some of the most exhausting I’ve encountered in some time!  All textbook adoptions for next fall are due in a week, so I am swamped with books orders so my stress levels have been through the roof.  I used the stress as an excuse to not work out.  In reality, it would have been better for me to work out, and release that stress with some good sweat sessions.
Since I skipped so many workouts, I attempted to make some back up today.  I kicked it into high gear, and knocked out three of the four I missed.  I was scheduled to run 4 miles today, so I made that my priority and first focus.  Next, I walked briskly at a 2% incline for 30 minutes which covered my missed cross training day from yesterday.  Wednesday I was supposed to run 2 miles, and since I still had energy left, I decided I could handle that today too.  Now, the only training I’ve missed was 3 miles I was supposed to run on Friday.
I now feel a lot better about my training.  Since my training plan is only 12 weeks long, and the half marathon is in exactly 12 weeks, well 11 as of tomorrow, it’s critical that I get ALL of my workouts in.  I still feel guilty that I let stress keep me away from the gym when I knew it was a lame excuse, but at least I made up for it.
After eating really well all day, and burning almost 900 calories at the gym, I’m off to eat a well deserved Klondike bar!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Snow Day

Workout:
3 mile run on treadmill – 31:28
30 minutes on upright bike – 8.1 miles
Happy snow day!  Well, snow afternoon.  It’s been snowing continuously since 6am in my neck of the woods, and a lot of local schools were closed for the day.  Those that were not closed ended up closing early.  The college I work at closed at 1:30 so I was able to hit the gym a lot earlier than I normally do.  It feels good to already have my work out done, and to have the rest of the night to relax with Nick and the dogs.
Yesterday, I officially started Hal Higdon’s half marathon training schedule.  Mondays, I only have stretch and strength, which I just did at home.  I was going to go to the muscle strengthening class at the gym, but my quads were still really sore, that I figured I should skip the class so my muscles can heal, and focused on my core at home.  I did a few different abs exercises I have pinned on the marvelous Pinterest, and I stretched everything out for a long time while watching tv.
Today, I just had the 3 mile run.  I felt really great after I finished my run, and wanted to burn a few more calories so I decided to hop on the bike for a bit.  I’m glad I did because Nick will be making enchiladas tonight for dinner which is one of my favorite meals!  Nick’s enchiladas are amazing, and I have a hard time controlling my portion size when he makes them. Now that I banked a ton of extra calories from working out, I won’t feel as guilty!  Usually he makes chicken enchiladas, but tonight he’s switching it up and is using steak instead.  I’m not much of a beef eater, but I’m sure they will still be phenomenal.
One last thing I would like to share today is my favorite post-workout snack.
Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
1 banana
1 TBS Jif Natural Creamy Peanut Butter
½ C Blue Diamond Almond Milk (I use original or Vanilla)
¼ C Vanilla Greek Yogurt
1 TSP Flaxseed
Dash of Cinnamon
Toss everything into the blender, and mix until everything is blended and the banana is pureed.  Enjoy!

Productive Saturday

Yesterday was a productive day!
Nick and I were up by 6:15, and we had washed all the dishes, cleaned the kitchen, started laundry, vacuumed and clean the living room and bedroom carpets, and ate a delicious breakfast, all before 8am.
After that, we just relaxed, and I worked on paying bills.  Around 11 I decided it was time to get my butt to the gym. I ran two miles on the treadmill, did the strength circuit I learned on Wednesday in class, and biked on an upright for 20 minutes.
I felt amazing after my workout, but during it, it was a bit of a struggle.  When it comes to running on the treadmill, I really have mixed feelings.  Sometimes my runs on the treadmill seem like a breeze since the belt helps propel me along.  Other days, I really have to push myself to keep that constant pace.  When you’re running outside, you mostly like are not keeping yourself at an exact constant pace.  Outside, you’re more easily able to find the pace that your body is comfortable maintaining.  My average pace is usually 10:00 miles, or a little under 10:00, so I would have to run 6 mph on the treadmill.  Half the time that pace feels impossible because I doubt I am consistently maintaining that speed the entire time when I’m running outside.  I’m ready for this cold Wisconsin weather to get warmer so I can leave the treadmill behind!
Yesterday I also struggled with the squats in my strength circuit.  I haven’t done a proper squat since high school, so my legs were still a little bit sore from Wednesday’s class.  I did one set of 12, and really felt the burn after that.  On my second set of 12, I only got to 8 before I had to stop.  My quads hurt so badly that I could barely get out of the squat!!  I decided to just skip the squats throughout the rest of my circuit so that I’m not so sore that I can’t do them in class on Monday.  After a lot of stretching last night, my quads feel much better.  Still a little sore, but at least I’m not wincing every time I sit down and stand up.
Once I was finished working out, had showered, ate lunch, relaxed with the dogs, and took a nap, Nick and I headed into Madison for date night.  We ate at a phenomenal restaurant called Jac’s.  Nick had the surf and turf special, and he said the steak was the best he has ever had.  I had smoked salmon blt and a side salad, and it was fabulous.
After dinner, we went to a production of Arabian Nights at the college I work at.  This college is a small, private, Catholic college.  For the size of our theater, and the small population of theatre students, we put on some really great shows!  The costumes were beautiful, and the show overall was dramatic yet comedic.  It gave me chills at times, and at the end I teared up a bit because the students had done such a great job!  I know a few of them from working in the Bookstore, and I was so proud of them!
Today, I have nothing planned except grocery shopping and studying for the Spanish exam I have Monday.  I’ll hit up the gym eventually to either bike or use the elliptical.  On Monday I will be starting Hal Higdon’s half marathon training guide so I’m taking the day off from running.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Trying Something New

Trying something new can be quite terrifying at times.  Last night I tried something new that I was nervous/a little afraid to do, and right now I am doing something else that terrifies me.
What I was afraid of last night, was taking a fitness class with my aunt.  My aunt and I go to the same gym, and it offers a variety of classes throughout the week.  I am not necessarily in poor shape, but I am not in great shape either.  The class I was to take with my aunt was a muscle building class.  It is important to incorporate strength training into my overall marathon training if I want to perform well.  I was nervous to take this class because I was afraid I would not be able to keep up.  This class has been going on twice a week since January, and I was worried I would not know the moves, and that I would be the chump in the corner messing up and lagging behind.
I became even more nervous when we walked into the room, and I was the youngest person by at least 15 years.  How embarrassing would it be to be shown up by people old enough to be my parents, or possibly my grandparents?  Luckily, there were only seven of us taking the class last night so there would not be too many people to witness my embarrassing performance.  I was quickly surprised, and overjoyed, that the moves were easy to learn, and the instructor was kind enough to explain moves to me if I did not know them.  I had absolutely no trouble keeping up, and it was a fun class.  Happily, it was a GREAT workout, and I am really glad I overcame the fear and participated. I am extremely sore today, but it is that good sore feeling.  The feeling that you did a kick ass workout.
What terrifies me right now is writing this blog.  I am terrified to put myself out there, and have other people read about my successes and failures.  I read a lot of great fitness/health blogs though, and it seems that blogging really helps keep the person on track with their fitness goals.  By blogging, I will need to be more accountable because I do not want to report continual failures.  I want to report successes to my readers!  I know there might be a few failures along my path of training for a marathon, but I obviously want my successes to greatly outweigh them.
Now that I have started this blog, and I took a new fitness class, I have decided to make it a goal to try something new at least once a month.  The something new can be anything from a new fitness class, to a new workout I try at home, to new recipes or foods, to a new way to style my hair.  Just anything that takes me out of my comfort zone, and helps me gain new experiences.
I am excited to be here and to share my journey with you!
Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Welcome!

I started a blog over at wordpress a couple of weeks ago, but I have now decided to switch to blogger.  I will be re-posting all the post I wrote at the old blog today, so get ready for an overload!
